I found the hardest part of doing a portrait is composition. Rather than the picture just being a picture of a person or people a portrait has to be balanced and correctly postioned.
The first shot is awesome. The lighting and colors are beautiful. The second one is cool too because it shows the "W" rock really well as well as the kid while keeping them both as the target.
I agree with Meredith and Maggie that your first shot is the best of the two. You are very correct that the hardest part of doing a portrait is composition. Of course, once you get past all of the other things like lighting, making the person feel comfortable, and making sure all your settings are correct.
Another thing to think about would be color. I think you have done a wonderful job keeping this in an analogous color scheme. What would it look like if he had a red shirt on? Try it out in Photoshop and see what happens.
The second shot is way too typical. You have the subject placed directly in the center of the image and the lines created from the W and his legs and his arms as well as the symmetrical placement of the trees in the background all bring your eye to the center… And then what? Think about the things that you have learned this semester about composition and what can make it dynamic. Placement on the rule of thirds lines, contrasting of colors, a low angle, or a high angle. You have this in the first photo. Keep practicing.
I agree with the others. The first one is my favorite! I really like the position in which you shot the photo, and the bring green of the leaves. I also like the shade of blue of the boys shirt. I like it goes well with the green leaves. I like the second photo, as well and how the rock and boy are centered between the two trees in the background.
Great pictures Nick! I really like the angle of the first shot and I think you did a good job with the balance and position.

ReplyDeleteThe first photo just works so well. The angle is nice, as well as the color palate.
